What is outsourcing?. Outsourcing is a contract with another company or person to perform certain functions, almost every organization out sources in some way, typically, outsourcing functions that are considered non-core to the business. An insurance company, for example, might outsource the cleanliness and landscaping operations to firms that specialize in these kinds of jobs because they are not associated with insurance or strategic to the business. Outside companies that provide outsourcing services are third-party providers, or because they are more commonly called, the service provider. Although outsourcing has been around as long as work specialization has existed, in history, companies began employing the outsourcing model to carry out narrow functions, such as entry of payroll, billing and data. They hire a lot of outsourcing service providers to handle almost all aspects of a new project, from product design, to software coding, to testing, to localization, and even for marketing and sales.
In all cases, the success of outsourcing depends on three factors: executive-level support within the client organization to outsource mission, communication is sufficient for the employees affected, and the client’s ability to manage service providers. The outsourcing professionals in charge of working on both client and provider sides need a combination of skills in areas such as negotiation, communication, project management, ability to understand the terms and conditions of contracts and service level agreements, and, above all, willingness to be flexible as business needs change. Challenges of outsourcing become particularly acute when the work is being done in different countries, since that involves language, cultural differences and time zones.
